Food Quantity Guide: How Much to Cater Per Guest

Chefs portioning biryani and grilled meats for a large event

Quantity planning is the least glamorous and most important part of catering. A complete guide from the Paradise Catering event team in Faisalabad, written from more than five hundred real celebrations.

Where to start

Begin with three fixed points — your date, your venue and your approximate guest count. Every other decision, from menu depth to staffing and décor scale, follows from those three numbers.

What experienced planners do differently

  • Count children separately at roughly half an adult portion.
  • Add a buffer above confirmed headcount for late arrivals.
  • BBQ events need more per-guest meat than mixed buffets.
  • Dessert demand rises sharply at evening weddings.

A note on quantities

Under-catering is the single most common regret we hear. Plan for a small buffer above your confirmed headcount, and always separate children's portions from adult portions in your estimate.
